4+4 Border Health Program

The 4+4 Border Health Program is one of the HSHPS U.S.-Mexico Border Internship Programs and is based at the University of Texas San Antonio Health Science Center. This unique 9-week paid traineeship provides each trainee with an increased understanding of public health along the U.S.-Mexico border through practical hands-on experiences with up to ¾ of program time to be spent in the field learning about environmental, international and public health issues and diseases.

FRONTERA: Focusing Research on the Border Area

FRONTERA: Focusing Research on the Border Area is one of the HSHPS U.S.-Mexico Border Internship Programs and is based at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine / Arizona Hispanic Center of Excellence ( www.azhcoe.medicine.arizona.edu). This unique 10-week paid training internship provides an increased understanding of public health along the U.S.-Mexico border through practical hands-on training, role model mentoring and collaboration, and networking skills building in a supportive environment. Each FRONTERA graduate level and professional trainee will be matched, according to their area of interest, with a faculty mentor whose research has an impact on border health.

Hispanic Health Professional Training for HIV/AIDS and Related Infections in the US-Mexico Border Region

HSHPS and UCSD, Division of International Health and Cross-Cultural Medicine ( http://ihccm.ucsd.edu) will support 6-month paidtraining internships for qualified Hispanic students or recent graduates interested in research experiences in HIV/AIDS and related infections with Latino populations living in the US-Mexico border region. The goal of the program is to train the next generation of Hispanic public health and biomedical researchers with expertise in substance abuse and its infectious disease consequences, especially HIV, viral hepatitis, TB and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Each trainee will be matched with a UCSD principal mentor with whom they will plan a research project and design a customized program of activities based on areas of interest and level of experience.
